Starting your own business and raising a child have more similarities than one might think. They both take a lot of hard work, time, and devotion. And while each may not be entirely predictable or turn out to go as planned, owning a business and raising a family are two things that you can be proud of and have fun with. Being a mom and running a business actually compliment each other quite well. So how does one go about balancing these two milestones in life without losing focus on one? Here are some simple things to keep in mind when you’re juggling both of these roles and how to make them work together.
1. Develop a clear plan or vision. Just as with giving birth to a baby, you need to plan for the birth of your business. Use the same organization you used in preparing for the new arrival to your family as you would for a new business venture. The same level of determination can be applied to both of these roles you’re taking on.
2. Saving money. If you already have kids and you’re starting a business you’re probably realizing that spending money on nights out with friends or vacations is becoming nonexistent. This is not all bad! You can use the fact that you have a child to take care of AND a new business to save for as a positive to spend money wisely. Therefore, you’ll start making smarter spending decisions and have more cash to use on your business.
3. Have support. Asking for help can be difficult for some people, especially those who are independent enough to go out on their own and start a business. When you’re both a mother and an entrepreneur though, asking for support from others will help you juggle things better. Have a babysitter (or a husband) on hand for when you really need to focus on your business. Outsource tasks for your start-up that you don’t need to do yourself necessarily so you can have more time with your family. By prioritizing and having a support system finding the balance will be much easier.
4. Find your passion. If you’re not running a business that you truly love, keeping up momentum and having it be successful will prove difficult. Find something you love, so when the going gets tough, your passion for it will keep you going, just as with motherhood.
