Unless you haven’t watched television in the past ten years, it should come as no surprise to you that reality television has taken off in a big way. While this genre may be known its outrageous cast members and on-screen fights, there are also some notable entrepreneurs to come out of this trend. Here’s a few that have been successful. See how reality TV was the trick in making their businesses take off!
Bethenny Frankel - This natural foods chef started her foray into reality television by competing on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, placing in second place. She then became one of the women featured on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City, which led to her own spin-off show Bethenny Getting Married? While she’s clearly made a name for herself in the tv world, she’s also done well in the business world simultaneously. Best-selling cookbooks, workout videos, skin-care products, and her trademark Skinnygirl margarita are all apart o the Bethenny Frankel empire. Frankel is one of those natural entrepreneurs who can seemingly make a business out of anything and she used reality television buzz to do it. Now with a new husband and baby, Frankel pretty much has it all!
Rocco Dispirito - You may remember Dispirito from the show The Restaurant, which showcased the process of opening up his own Italian restaurant, the now defunct Rocco’s 22nd Street, in New York. While reality television didn’t help his restuarant become successful, it did open other channels for entrepreneurship. He currently hosts his own show on A&E called Rocco Gets Real, and he’s appeared on other reality hits such as Top Chef, Dancing with the Stars, and The Biggest Loser. Reality television definitely got his name out in the culinary world. He now has five best-selling cookbooks and has been a recipient of the James Bears Award.
The Kardashians - So, entrepreneur may not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking about this reality television family. But Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, and their mom Kris Jenner are all business owners. The entire family participates in the successful show Keeping Up with the Kardashians on the E! network. Sisters Kourney and Khloe also have a spin-off show of their own, Kourtney and Khloe take Miami and Kim has appeared on Dancing with the Stars. These ladies also have a successful family business: their upscale clothing stores Dash with locations in California and Miami. From the reality show, Kim turned that success into workout videos, a fragrance, and a shoe website, ShoeDazzle, among other ventures. I think it’s safe to say that this family may not have the profitable businesses they’ve cultivated without the help of reality television.
These are just a few of the recent entrepreneurs who found their success by participating the reality phenomenon. Try thinking of some other famous business owners who got their start this way too. Reality programming isn’t just a guilty pleasure anymore!

Reality TV has taken off in a huge way! It is great to see such shows (not the crap ones of course)Well done to all the successful people who took advantage!
Reality TV does expose the good, bad, and often ugly but the key is it, "exposes." In the words of Dana Carvey, "If you put a grapefruit on television and put it in a department store window, somebody would walk by and say, 'look honey, there's the grapefruit that we saw on television.'" TV exposes everything and if you do the right things with that exposure you can profit.
