Ideas Into Action

Finishing my first major grant proposal at EG this week, I kept coming up with ideas on what to do and what not to do for future grant projects. Develop a vision, organize myself better, make sure the printer has ink - all tips that could make the grant writing process more efficient and improve the quality of the proposal. But now I have these ideas...how do I make them a reality?

This question is one that's familiar to most business owners. Where do I start? Will any of my ideas work? Well remove any doubts because there are practical things you can do to put those great ideas into action. Here are some points I hope to use myself as I continue my work at EG:

1. Write out your overall goal and vision
Your ideas need a purpose. Ask yourself what you hope to gain in the short-term and long-term from your ideas. Write out one end goal and any sub-goals leading up to that accomplishment. What will you gain materially (donations, contracts, sales, etc) and personally (work satisfaction, better knowledge, etc)?

2. Organize your materials
Make a list of resources you will need to reach that goal. These can be big, such as a bank loan, or smaller, such as special hardware tools or materials. Make sure your existing resources such as computers (or a printer in my case) are up to speed and ready for the task at hand.

3. Break your idea into steps
One idea is usually made up of many steps. Outline each of these steps and work on them one at a time. Develop a schedule giving yourself enough time to fully develop each step. By the end of the process, the steps will come together to form your overall goal or vision.

Developing ideas takes hard work and careful diligence. As you go through the process though, you may start to learn or think more about the idea. Refining and redeveloping your goal as you go along is a good thing. The lessons you learn from one idea may help when you work on the next.

My daughter tells me "You plan and God laughs". I talk a lot about fate and faith. I have encouraged my children to hear the voice from within and now that I get to the point of exploring my passions; I go back to principles of business and management. I believe my creativity has been drummed out of me or my left brain side has grown twice the rate of the right side. I complain about how the schools don't allow our children to think and discover; while I go back to the thoughts of others at my opportunity of flight.

Many of my ancestors created businesses, with success, without a business plan, without investor, without loans; based only on demand and supply. They took raw talent and against many, large barriers, made good livings. I know my gifts: I connect with the calm in others to bring peace to situations; I know the strengths of others to build compliments and suppliments; and my presence often allow others to challenge themselves. There is no business name to put on these skills and I will continue to give in retirement.
